What are the healthiest counties in Alabama? New rankings have the answer
by Alan Alexander, Reporter

Shelby County ranks as the healthiest county in Alabama for 2015. That comes from comprehensive data compiled in an annual joint study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute that examines 30 different health, socioeconomic and environmental factors.

Shelby County was followed by Badlwin County (No. 2), Lee County (No. 3), Madison County (No. 4) and Coffee County (No. 5). Jefferson County ranked No. 24.

Shelby County, which is also the wealthiest in the state, ranked No. 1 in all of the measured factors except for physical environment, where it ranked No. 32.

A strong correlation exists between wealth and health. In fact, the three least healthy counties, Walker County, Lowndes County and Wilcox County, all posted some of the highest unemployment rates while the top three healthiest counties posted some of the lowest unemployment rates.
